It was the IIJW at the start of August, a a 2 year new initiative to showcase budding and leadingIndian jewellery designers, and make bold statements across the globe.
IIJW provides an international platform also to design houses to unveil their classic and contemporary jewellery collections to the world jewellery market; thereby establishing India as the most sought after destination for quality jewellery.
The foreign press had been in full attendance with international magazines like Vogue Jewellery, Phoenix Jewellery and Bazaar Jewellery from China; Instyle Magazine, Russia; Cosmopolitan, USA; Vogue Gioiello, Italy; Equo, Boutique and Caprice from Azerbaijan; L’Official, Tokyo and Collection Magazine from Beirut giving full coverage to the event. The international media contingent from around the world was quite thrilled about the talented Indian designers and at the press conferences eagerly inquired about the progress of the industry and its plans for the future.
Bollywood stars have been walking the ramp for the shows since its inception and it was no different this year.
So feast your eyes on some pretty bling bling; some traditional while others innovative. I am in such awe of the decadence!!
Lets begin with the ad for this year’s event, featuring actress Sonam Kapoor. This is a rather contemporary yet ethnic jewellery set she has on.
This piece is more classic, reminiscent of olden-era jewellery worn by royalty
This is my fav piece on her for this year’s IIJW.
Im on the fence with this one.
Sonam is the daughter of actor Anil Kapoor, who the Western world will recognise as the host of the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionare in the movie Slumdog Millionaire. He also appeared in M1:4 and a season of the show 24.
Bollywood veteran actress Zeenat Aman wearing a traditional styled necklace
I love the shade of henna green on this next piece.
Black really brings out the opulence in these pieces.
I will Never see the Hubster in such jewellery hee hee, but hey it’s rather dapper don’t you think?
For some reason this looks kinda tribal.
Very subtle hint of it.
Now this piece I love, so old school and very sensual with her outfit
I can’t make up my mind on what’s prettier – the lehenga (traditional Indian top & skirt that flows like a gown) or the jewels!
Henna green with pearls looks so chic!
The head adornment is gorgeous.
This next one features actress & ex Miss Universe Lara Dutta who I think is really gorgeous and can carry off anything with elegance.
Actress Neha Dhupia, looking splendid and the head adornment in the second picture is to die for!
this is such an ornate nose ring!
Wish I had a nose piercing but my sinuses will never let me do so *sniff*
Very cool that they incorporated an image of a god and goddess like in a painting on the pendant. Quite innovative.
This is a classic Indian piece, which Im sure I own a similar set of from the wedding.
Another look that has a gorgeous colour paired with the jewellery. The model’s makeup is beautiful don’t you think?
I call this Matrimonial Chic haha!
Since this is the kind of jewellery & clothing you will see on an Indian bride and groom
Here are some very sensual looks, as if straight out of the carvings on Khajuraho
Model turned Actress Mughda Godse
One Word : Fierce!
Actress Chitraganghda Singh looking fabulous as usual
Actress Jacqueline Fernandes
Actress Aditi Rao Hydari who I personally think has an adorable smile
Aditi’s Doppelgänger? Like seriously?
Sonakshi Sinha : enough said!
Another very traditional piece
The beautiful actress Huma Qureshi
Stunning black outfits
Actor Rana Daggubati – Swoon, Sigh, Drool
Shades of Green…ish
These earrings remind me of a pair Beyonce wore with a black gown for the Academy Awards a few years back..
Im kinda Meh about actress Shreya but the lehenga and jewellery is fabulous 🙂
Quite like the earrings and bangles
ah yes our Angelina Jolie lookalike, Ms Haydon
Someone I look up to in the Indian showbiz industry, Shabana Azmi. She’s really warm and unassuming in person too, had the good fortune of meeting her in the flesh when I was a kid
The sari I wore for my marriage solemnisation ceremony has the exact same hue of blue. The clash of colours here is just magnificent.
Indian chokers have been popular for a very long time
Actress Mahima Chaudhary flashing that ever-radiant smile
I love Love Love LOVE this woman!
Former Miss Universe turned actress Sushmita Sen
If Im not wrong, this lass is a foreign actresses trying to break into the Bollywood industry. Seeing a lot more of that these days.
The adorable newbie actress Alia Bhatt
Another newbie actress, Yami Gautam
The very talented actress Kangana Ranaut
A Western-style gown for a change
A collage of pictures from IIJW 2013
Hope you enjoyed looking at the gorgeous jewellery and outfits! This post is also written in honour of India’s Independence Day that happened yesterday, August 15.
With India moving fashion forward, my hope for my motherland is that it’s traditions and values move with the times as well. There needs to be a radical shift of priorities – strong clamp down on crimes against women and people of lower castes. That these crimes still occur at such high frequencies is alarming. Please make me feel prouder to call myself of Indian heritage.
